John has a passion for Pigs and in particular the Gloucester Old Spot which he believes carries more flavour than all of the commercial breeds. Johns Pigs live outdoors all year around and have magnificent views over the moors to keep them occupied! There are two boars and the pregnant sows live next to the farmhouse when the are about to give birth - where upon Johns wife, Caroline, keeps a close eye. The piglets are weaned naturally and they then go back outside for fattening.
Johns thinks it is a real shame the Gloucester Old Spot is a rare breed and his aim via Gribble’s is to familiarise the public with just how good this meat tastes particulary when reared outside without rings in their nose’s. Farmers do this to prevent the Pigs from rooting the ground up and making a mess of the pasture. This however is a Pigs favourite pastime and John beleives that this practice would be similar to ’cutting off a pianists fingers’!
John adds ’ with good rotation of the groups around the land there is no need to ring their noses. The pigs absolutley love it here and as you can see they are very happy indeed. I believe this gives us a top welfare standard Pig and our customers a top quality product’.
