New Gribbles Butchers Opens in Torquay
Gribbles Butchers are to open their third retail shop in Torre, Torquay. Well known in Ivybridge and online, they have now taken on the former Butchery premises of the successful Bill White & Sons Butchers at Brunswick Square in Torre.
Owner Mark Gribble is a tenth generation Devonian whose family have long history in Bovey Tracey and his business is well recognised and recommended for the top quality locally farmed produce his shops supply.
Mark says ‘Our ethos is to support the local community. We are very proud Devonians and it is farming that shapes our countryside and what makes Devon so attractive for people to visit and want to come and live. We buy all our Beef, Lamb, Pork & Poultry from farmers we know personally and all our stock is reared using traditional methods to the highest welfare standards including using a local family abattoir in Ashburton in order to keep animal miles to a minimum and ensure welfare standards are the highest possible available’.
Mark adds “Traceabilty of produce, local and environmental issues, provenance and procurement are all much bigger factors in what customers demand nowadays when making an informed purchase decision. The fact that we are able to offer all of this means that the local Butcher has come back strongly in recent years.

The new retail shop in Torquay will provide 3/4 new jobs in that area and Gribbles Butchers were attracted there for a variety of reasons.
Mark adds “I was at S Devon College for 3 years and know that area reasonably well. I thought that the Brunswick Square area has been tidied up very well and an additional 300 houses I saw as very positive benefit for retail there. Also the fact that directly opposite the shops is free parking for 20 minutes combined with the existing retail shops including (amongst many others) a Post Office, Greengrocer, Delicatessen, Newsagent, Sports shop & numerous Cafes & Salons meant to me that everything can be done in Torre for customers who are now realising that shopping locally has many more positive benefits for the themselves, the environemt & the community than out of town sites do. Shops are often more specialised, offer a superior, friendly service, supply top quality local produce and are often much better value for money than elsewhere.
The new Gribbles Butchers shop is opening at 10am on Monday 11th June and is to be opened by former proprietors and owners Mabel White (widow of Bill) & their son Alan whose family ran the shop very successfully there for many many years.
